Being a child is wonderfully exciting. You have no worries about money, job security or any of those other horrid and boring things! Not only that, but you can remain totally enthralled with an empty cardboard box for hours on end; it can be a car, a hiding place, an aeroplane, a time machine…

Should You Let Your Kids Take You For Granted?

I once read that kids have the ability to be the very cruel because they do not understand how much pain they cause. Well, I certainly agree with this assessment. Have you ever felt that your kids are using you? You cook for them, clean the house and take care of them without expecting anything in return. However, they proceed to treat you like a permanent slave who requires a bit of mollycoddling now and then to get the job done.

Well, kids never understand the sacrifices that parents have to make to bring them up properly. I am not talking about the monetary sacrifices that we have made. I personally do not find it to be a big deal. Instead, it is the small sacrifices that parents make on a daily basis that make a huge difference. Kids may not think twice about demanding a replacement R4 3DS card for their gaming console after having lost the first one in an irresponsible manner.

Well, they never bother to ask whether the money that they are demanding was allocated for some other purpose. It may be something as small as a dinner date that their parents were planning. Or, it may be something as big as the savings for college education.

So, how to overcome this problem? It is not sufficient to simply criticize the kids for being bad. At the end of the day, they are innocent beings and do not realize that they are behaving in an improper manner. The responsibility of correcting them, obviously, lies upon the parent.

It is advisable to communicate the issue to the kid in the simple and clear manner. The child must be informed that he or she cannot take parents for granted simply because they are there. Loving the child is one thing but that does not mean the child can use the parents as permanent source of money or help. Saying this may make one feel as if one is a bad parent. However, getting this message across early is important to help the child become responsible.
